Reimagining the Backbone of Regional Logistics: Partner with the National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ)

The Strategic Opportunity

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ) is embarking on a transformative Recapitalisation Roadmap designed to restore, modernise and expand its 2,760 km rail network. Positioned at the heart of the Southern African Development Community (SADC), NRZ serves as the vital transit artery connecting the rich mining and agricultural hubs of Zambia, the DRC and Botswana to the deep-water seaports of Mozambique and South Africa.

With immediate market demand sitting at 5.65 million tonnes and projected to skyrocket past 14 million tonnes by 2034, we invite visionary global investors, financiers, and technical partners to participate in a highly profitable, sustainable transformation journey.

The Investment Scope of our prioritised, phased recapitalisation framework requires an overall investment ranging from US$533 million to US$600 million.

Phase 1 (Immediate Short-Term): Optimised and streamlined to US$115 million to rapidly unlock operational bottlenecks, remove track cautions and capture immediate high-yield freight traffic.

Choose Your Area of Investment

We offer structured participation models (including Public-Private Partnerships, Build-Operate-Transfer arrangements and joint ventures) across six key operational pillars and three major expansion corridors. Select your area of strategic interest below:

1. Core Rail Infrastructure & Track Maintenance

Rehabilitating and upgrading our mainline corridors to support heavier axle loads and eliminate speed restrictions.

Scope: Upgrading key mainlines from 45 kg/m to 60 kg/m rail, yard rehabilitations (Thmpson junction, Mpopoma, Dabuka, Lochinvar, Mutare) and mainline bridges and culverts rehabilitation and upgrade.

Target: Restoring design capacity to handle up to 18 million tonnes per annum safely.

2. Next-Gen Signalling & Telecommunications

Replacing legacy systems with modern, digital train control architecture.

Scope: Turnkey rollout of systems aligned with ATMS/FTC Management System standards across four major economic corridors (e.g., Harare-Mutare, Harare - Bulawayo, Somabhula - Chicuacuala/Rutenga-Beitbridge, Bulawayo - Victoria Falls).

Focus: Transitioning from manual operations to an automated, secure, and precise train working system.

3. Traction Locomotives (Procurement & Refurbishment)

Powering the future fleet to meet surging regional volume demands.

New Fleet: Procurement of high-efficiency 3000HP, 2250HP, and 1500HP mainline/shunting locomotives with dual air/vacuum braking.

Refurbishment: Capital overhaul and life-extension programs for up to 89 existing DE locomotive class units.

4. Freight Rolling Stock (Wagons & Tankers)

Capitalising on bulk commodities that anchor the southern African economy.

Market Focus: Sourcing and rebuilding High-Sided (HIS), Drop-Sided (DSI), Gondola and container flat-bed wagons to transport lithium, coal, chrome, steel, and agricultural outputs.

Opportunity: High utilization rates driven by locked-in off-take demand from mining and industrial high volume generating entities.

5. Relaunched Passenger & Smart Transit Services

Modernizing intercity travel and pioneering urban green transit solutions.

Intercity Eco-Trains: Deploying passenger coaches equipped with rooftop solar panels for onboard electricity and bio-toilets.

Urban Light Rail Partnerships: Developing high-capacity commuter light rail networks integrated into greater Harare and Bulawayo metro zones.

6. Mechanical Workshops & Depot Digitalization

Upgrading the historic mechanical hubs that service the subcontinent’s rolling stock.

Scope: Supply of heavy breakdown cranes, heavy-capacity jacks, and advanced structural fabrication machinery.

Tech Shift: Implementing enterprise computerization for automated procurement and inventory control.

High-Growth Mega Expansion Projects

For investors seeking long-term Greenfield and Brownfield concessions, NRZ has prioritized strategic regional links to eliminate transit gaps:

Project Corridor Estimated Distance Primary Economic Driver Strategic Purpose
Lion’s Den – Kafue Link 217 km (Zim side) Copper, Fuel, Fertilizers, Coal Bypasses circuitous routes, creating a direct, shorter rail link between Zambia/DRC mining belts and the Mozambican Port of Beira.
Mvuma/Manhize – Nyazura Link 220 km Steel, Minerals, Phosphates Connects the massive new Manhize Iron & Steel Processing Plant directly to the Beira trade corridor.

Why Invest Now? The Anchor Markets

The business case for NRZ is secured by booming regional sectors requiring bulk transport that road freight cannot economically sustain. Our anchor traffic includes:

Mining & Energy (50% of business): Exponential surge in Lithium concentrates, Ferrochrome, Steel and Coke exports, alongside domestic chrome, coal movement.

Industrial & Agricultural (39% of business): Dedicated bulk logistics for steel, cement clinker, fertilizers, salt, raw sugar, and grains.

Intermodal Inland Dry Ports: Establishing extended custom-bonded dry ports in Harare, Gweru, Mutare, and Rutenga to facilitate end-to-end regional logistics.
