Engineering Services

The National Railways of Zimbabwe (NRZ), through Inter Rail Tech, a Strategic Business Unit within its Mechanical and Electrical Workshops, offers a comprehensive range of engineering services. The workshops are among the largest integrated engineering facilities in Southern Africa and are equipped to maintain, repair and refurbish locomotives and rolling stock, while also manufacturing components and spare parts for the railway, mining and engineering industries.

Services Offered

Inter Rail Tech provides locomotive maintenance, repair and refurbishment; wagon maintenance, repair and refurbishment; coach and caboose maintenance and refurbishment; rewinding services; foundry services; machining; fabrication; plant and equipment hire; and a range of specialised engineering services.

Locomotive Maintenance, Repair and Refurbishment

The Mechanical Workshops located in Bulawayo and Mutare provide comprehensive locomotive maintenance, repair and refurbishment services. These include engine overhauls, traction motor overhauls, bogie overhauls, brake system overhauls, wheelset pressing, retrying and reprofiling, as well as compressor and expressor overhauls.

Wagon Maintenance, Repair and Refurbishment

Inter Rail Tech also provides complete wagon maintenance, repair and refurbishment services, including body repairs, bogie overhauls, and wheelset reprofiling and rediscing to ensure reliable freight operations.

Coach and Caboose Maintenance

Coach and caboose maintenance services include body repairs and bogie overhauls, helping to maintain safe, reliable and comfortable passenger rolling stock.

Rewinding Services

The Armature Winding Workshop in Bulawayo specialises in professional rewinding services, including armature winding, stator winding, AC/DC motor repairs and overhauls, press facilities, vacuum pressure impregnation (Epoxylite varnishing), automatic TIG welding, transformer services and oven curing.

Foundry Services

The Foundry Section has facilities capable of producing high-quality cast iron, brass and aluminium castings for railway and industrial applications.

Blacksmith Shop

The Blacksmith Shop manufactures high-quality forgings in various grades of steel. It also manufactures and reconditions helical and leaf springs while carrying out heat treatment and spring testing.

Machining Services

The Machine Shop is equipped with a wide range of machinery, including vertical borers, horizontal borers, CNC lathes, surface grinders and cylindrical grinders. Engineering operations carried out include turning, drilling, planning, boring, milling and gear cutting to produce precision-engineered components.

Fabrication Services

The Platerwelder Shop provides general steel fabrication, boiler re-tubing and refurbishment, steel sheet rolling, profile cutting, sand blasting, and specialised welding services including TIG, cast iron and aluminium welding.

Plant and Equipment Hire

A wide range of specialised plant and equipment is available for hire, including a 120-ton breakdown crane, re-railing equipment, hydraulic and screw jacks, a 100-ton wheel press, and a vacuum pressure impregnation plant.

Specialised Engineering Services

Inter Rail Tech also provides radiator reconditioning, boiler inspections, wire and rope repairs and inspections, repair and maintenance of pneumatic equipment and chain blocks, as well as reconditioning and calibration of pressure gauges.
